Texas Flood Death toll hits 120 as alert delays spark outrage
Search and rescue teams continued their desperate hunt Thursday for more than 170 people still missing from catastrophic Fourth of July flooding in central Texas, as the confirmed death toll reached 120 and officials faced mounting criticism over delayed emergency alerts that may have cost lives.
Newly released dispatch audio reveals that a volunteer firefighter requested an emergency alert for residents at 4:22 a.m. on July 4 as the Guadalupe River surged, but county officials waited nearly 90 minutes before sending the first CodeRED warnings, according to audio obtained by KSAT. Some residents reported not receiving alerts until after 10 a.m., more than six hours after waters began rising.
